Industrial production saw an 8.5% decrease compared to the same period of the year 2019, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced Tuesday.
This decline is explained by the fall in production in the textile-clothing and leather industry (-32%), the building materials, ceramics and glass industry (-28.5%), the mechanical and electrical industries (-22.3%), the paper and cardboard industry (-21.9%), the rubber and plastics industry (-17%) and the wood industry (-16.8%).
On the other hand, industrial production recorded an increase in the sectors of agro-food industry (+13%), following the rise recorded in olive oil production, chemical industry (+7.7%) and mining (+4.5%).
Similarly, the INS states that production in the oil refining sector has increased following the resumption of STIR’s activity after an almost total halt last year.
In April 2020 alone, industrial production saw a historic decline of 38.6% compared to the same month in 2019.
This is mainly due to the strong decrease in the sectors of building materials, ceramics and glass industry (-81.4%), textile-clothing and leather industry (-81%) and mechanical and electrical industries (-62.5%).
