Tourism soars in 2024: A remarkable comeback!

The tourism sector has staged an extraordinary recovery in 2024, far surpassing even the most optimistic expectations.

After the bleak period marked by the COVID-19 crisis and global economic turbulence, the industry is now reaching unprecedented heights.

Aymen Rahmani, Director of Studies and International Cooperation at the Tunisian National Tourist Office (ONTT), announced on national radio on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, that Tunisia has welcomed 5.8 million tourists from the beginning of the year until August 10.

This marks a 6.7% increase in arrivals compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, 1.8 million Algerian tourists visited Tunisia during this period.

Algerian Tourist Surge

The influx of Algerian tourists rose by an impressive 16.9% compared to last year, and a staggering 26.2% compared to 2019.

The European market also showed strong growth, with 1.77 million European tourists visiting Tunisia during the same period, reflecting a 16.9% increase from the previous year. The French market, in particular, saw a 5.4% rise.

Tunisia’s diverse assets are proving to be a magnet for tourists, including those interested in cultural, nature, and authentic travel experiences. The country’s ecological richness, along with its vibrant cultural, archaeological, and culinary heritage, presents boundless opportunities for tourism growth.

A Sector in Need of Renewal

Despite this remarkable recovery, Tunisia’s tourism industry, several decades after its inception, requires a comprehensive overhaul to adapt to the changing landscape of global travel.

A broad discussion is needed to devise a new strategy that ensures the sector’s sustainable development.

Key recommendations include the adoption of a unified Tourism Code, streamlining procedures for managing alternative tourism, and creating certified projects within this sector.

These suggestions emerged from a study conducted by the Tunisian Federation of Travel Agencies (FTAV) in collaboration with the German Tour Operators Association (DRV).

The proposed Tourism Code aims to consolidate and simplify the current fragmented regulatory framework, making it easier for operators to navigate and comply with regulations.

This would not only enhance consistency in the sector but also facilitate more effective monitoring and oversight by relevant authorities.

As Tunisia’s tourism sector enters this new phase of growth, the focus on strategic development and regulatory reform will be crucial to sustaining its upward trajectory and capitalizing on its full potential.
