Citing economic reasons, the Bank of the Republic of Burundi (BRB) Tuesday put into circulation coins of 10 and 50 Burundian francs in replacement for notes of the same value.
Explaining the measure, the BRB governor, Gaspard Sindayigaya, said the low banking habits of Burundians, which had led to the rough handling of the notes, was the reason the coins were introduced.
He indicated that BRB should release annually money to renew the old notes
