Economist and academic researcher Abdelkader Boudriga stated in Midi Eco Thursday that the national barometer “MIQYES,” which measures the health of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), shows that 25% of Tunisian SMEs achieved accounting profits in 2023, an increase of 5% compared to 2022, despite the challenging economic conditions faced by Tunisia.
He noted that this indicates these companies, which employ between 6 and 200 workers, are one of the key drivers of employment.
However, he clarified that 70% of these SMEs rely on the local market, while only 12% of the remaining 30% fully export their products or services.
On another note, Boudriga highlighted that 50% of Tunisian SMEs did not submit financing requests in 2023, and 80% consider access to banking services and financing to be very difficult.
He added that most of these companies turn to leasing, which has an approval rate of 85%.
