Tunisia: 63% of international funding for projects blocked

Idriss Menaja, Director General for Major Projects at the Prime Ministry told Mosaique FM That 63% of the funds allocated for international cooperation projects have been blocked due to land and procedural problems.

Menaja stressed that the government has adopted a comprehensive approach to deal with the backlog of projects.

This includes Decree No. 22 of 2022, which introduced measures to speed up the implementation of these projects; Circular No. 27, which simplified their implementation; and Decree No. 497, which led to the creation of a higher committee dedicated to major public projects and to speeding up their implementation, under the supervision of the Prime Minister and with the support of the governors.

He explained that when a project is blocked, the problem is referred to this committee so that the necessary measures can be taken. He referred in particular to the project for a platform of production markets in the center, in Sidi Bouzid, covering five governorates.

Launched in 2012, this project, which was initially scheduled to last 18 months, has been delayed due to administrative and land issues.

It was therefore decided to start work immediately and proceed in stages, with studies to be completed in the first half of 2025 and the project operational in 2026.
