Monthly consumer prices rose by 0.9% in March 2025, after falling by 0.1% in the previous month, the National Statistical Institute (INS) announced on Sunday.
This increase is mainly due to a 2% rise in food prices and a 2.9% rise in clothing prices, according to an INS note on the consumer price index for March 2025.
Coinciding with the month of Ramadan, food prices rose by 2% on a month-on-month basis in March.
This increase was mainly due to higher prices for vegetables (+4.9%), fruit (+4.5%) and lamb (+4.3%). In contrast, prices of edible oil fell by 3.2%.
Clothing prices rose by 2.9%, reflecting the end of winter sales, which coincided with preparations for the Eid holiday. The price of clothing and footwear also rose, by 3%.
According to the INS, the ‘Manufactured goods’ and ‘Fresh food’ groups were the sectors that contributed most to the overall inflation rate, at 2.2% and 2.3% respectively.
The largest contributions to inflation came from the “Free non-food” and “Free food” groups, at 3.4% and 2.2% respectively.
