Tunisia: More than 1.5 million private sector workers informally employed

The World Bank (WB) report on “Tunisia’s Jobs Landscape” published Tuesday shows that nearly that nearly one in two workers in the private sector is employed informally.

According to the report, of nearly 2.8 million workers employed in the private sector in 2019, about 1.55 million workers were informal, with an average informality rate of 44%. The share of informal work in Tunisia is lower than the average of Arab states, excluding high-income countries (68.6% around 2016).

The report also noted that the rate of informality is considerably higher among self-employed workers (87.7%) than among employed workers (29%). The rate is estimated at 72% among employers and 92% among the self-employed.
