Tunisia: Public companies’ debt to state hits “very dangerous” levels!

48 public enterprises recorded negative net results of -1706 million dinars in 2021, led by the Grain Office (-477 million dinars), followed by the Tunis Transport Company (-225 million dinars), the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (-173.4 million dinars), the Entreprise tunisienne des activités pétrolières (-139 million dinars), the SNCFT (-137 million dinars) and the Office du commerce (-120.2 million dinars), revealed sociology researcher Jihad Haj Salem, describing the figure as “very dangerous”.

Speaking on Diwan Fm, he added that these figures, contained in a public report on the main indicators and the situation of a number of public companies, explain the emergence of crises in the country, since the three main public companies, which represent the pillar of the transport sector, are among the top five in terms of negative net results for the year 2021.

The same source indicated that the indebtedness of public companies to the state will reach 10,692 million dinars in 2022, stressing that it is constantly increasing and has reached a very dangerous figure, as it went up by about 22 per cent between 2021 and 2022.

The Caisse Nationale de Retraite et de Prévoyance Sociale tops the list (2,536.6 million dinars), followed by the Grain Office (1,620 million dinars) and the Tunis Transport Company.
