Tunisia second in Africa in Skills Ranking

In the rapidly evolving global job market, the demand for skilled workers, particularly in technology, is intensifying.

Coursera, the prominent online learning platform founded by Stanford University, has released its sixth annual Global Skills Report 2024, providing valuable insights into global and regional trends in business, technology, and data sciences.

Tunisia ranked second on the African continent and 76th globally in the World Skills Ranking.

This achievement underscores Tunisia’s commitment to enhancing the skills of its workforce, particularly in areas critical to the modern economy.

Cameroon leads the African rankings, holding the 74th spot worldwide, while Zambia follows Tunisia at 88th globally. Ethiopia, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa, and Uganda round out the top 10 in Africa, with global rankings ranging from 92nd to 102nd.

The report highlights a significant global challenge: approximately 3.4 million jobs remain unfilled due to a shortage of specific skills. This gap underscores the urgent need for targeted educational initiatives to equip the workforce with the competencies required in today’s economy.

While Tunisia and several other African nations are making strides in skills development, the report notes that sub-Saharan Africa recorded the lowest growth rate in skills acquisition, at just 12%.

The report recommends that governments in the region take proactive steps to improve access to learning resources, particularly e-learning, to bridge this gap and foster a more competitive workforce.

The Global Skills Report 2024 draws on data from Coursera’s extensive global learning community, comprising over 148 million learners and 7,000 institutional clients.

The report also integrates content from 325 of the world’s leading universities and industry partners.

To provide a holistic view, the report combines Coursera’s internal skills data with key economic indices, including global innovation, labor market participation, human capital, and GDP per capita.
