Tunisia: Total electricity generation down 5% by end of March 2024

Total electricity generation decreased by 5% to 4,175 GWh (including renewable self-generation), at the end of March 2024 compared to 4,392 GWh at the end of March 2023.

 According to the energy situation report for March 2024, production for the local market also fell slightly, by 2%.

Power purchases from Algeria and Libya covered 15% of the local market’s needs at the end of March 2024, the same source said. 

It added that STEG still accounted for the lion’s share of electricity production, with 96% of national production at the end of March 2024, while electricity produced from natural gas (STEG + IPP) fell by 6%.

 Electricity generation from renewables

 According to the same document, electricity generated from renewable energy sources stood at 5%.

 In addition, 235 MW of photovoltaic roofs were installed in the residential sector, and 314 authorizations were granted for a total capacity of 112 MW in the industrial, tertiary and agricultural sectors.

 Peak capacity decreased by 8% to 3073 MW at the end of March 2024, compared to 3337 MW at the end of March 2023.

Electricity sales decreased by 4% between end-March 2023 and end-March 2024.

Sales to high voltage customers fell by 12%, while sales to medium voltage customers also fell by 3%.

 Industrial consumers remain the largest electricity consumers, accounting for 62% of all HV/MV customer demand at the end of March 2024.  Most sectors recorded a decrease in sales, notably basic metals (-14%), Construction Material, Ceramics and Glass Industries (-12%), paper and publishing (-11%) and food and tobacco (-8%), while mining and quarrying (+6%) increased its sales.
