“We are committed to providing regular supply of electricity to all Tunisians” (Minister of Industry)

The Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) are committed to providing a regular supply of electricity to all Tunisian citizens and businesses, said Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday on the main measures taken to deal with the peak in electricity consumption this season, she added that there would be no disruption during the summer season, which sees record average consumption.

The Minister also referred to the increase in demand for electricity, which is at its peak, and stressed the importance of rationalising electricity consumption by adopting energy-saving habits.

To this end, a campaign has been launched to guarantee the supply of electricity under the best possible conditions.

The Minister pointed out that the selling price of electricity and energy products in Tunisia remains at a reasonable level, despite the increase in production and distribution costs.

She noted that the Ministry’s priority for the coming period is to provide locally produced energy resources from alternative and renewable sources.

During the press conference, the importance of the procedures adopted by the STEG this season to ensure a balance between supply and demand and to avoid the disruptions of previous years was stressed.

Peak electricity consumption is expected to reach 5,200 megawatts in the summer of 2024, compared to 4,825 megawatts in the summer of 2023, an increase of more than 7%.

To this end, further awareness and rationalisation campaigns are planned, as well as communication campaigns calling for more economical use of electricity and energy products.

The STEG is also coordinating with neighbouring countries to strengthen electricity exchanges and avoid blackouts.
