Tunisia: 42 ports, 12,317 fishing vessels and TND 400 million in revenue

Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Maritime Fisheries stated that the sector’s total production reached 126,000 tons in 2024, generating approximately 400 million dinars in revenue, around 17% of agricultural and food export earnings.

They noted during a hearing before the Agriculture and Food Security Committee of the Assembly of People’s Representatives (ARP), that this income comes mainly from 12,317 fishing units and 42 maritime fishing ports. The sector directly employs 42,000 people.

They also discussed the possibility of increasing Tunisia’s quota in the bluefin tuna fishing and fattening system, as well as amending the regulatory framework governing the sector to promote greater efficiency, transparency and fairness in the distribution of the national quota among purse seine vessels.

In addition, taxes and fees applied to the sector are expected to be reviewed.
