ADB President Kaberuka: High oil prices complicating the fight against poverty in Africa

Addis Ababa , 27 February 2006 It will be a challenge for African countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) unless sound policies are sustained and international support is more effective, the President of the African Development Bank, Mr.Donald Kaberuka has said.

Uganda: Flower export earnings increase by $32 million

UGANDA has registered an increase in flower export earnings this year of over $36 million up from $32 million in 2004. According to Uganda Flower Exporters Association so far 70,000 tonnes of flower species have been exported compared to last year's 63,000 tonnes.

E.A Community ready for open regional labour transfer

THE International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the East African Community (EAC) have started collaborations that will see the free movement of persons and labour among East African nationals in search of employment opportunities. The Director of ILO Area Office for East Africa, Mr Ali Ibrahim, said the East African component project launched in Arusha last year and financed by the European Union (EU) will support implementation of the EAC treaty commitment in its chapter 17, to establish free movement of persons, labour, services and enjoyment of the right of establishment and residence of citizens within the community.

Recipients and donors review cooperation programme

Trade Ministers and representatives of the 16 African  countries benefiting from the programme, as well as Trade Ministers and representatives from the donor countries, and Senior Representatives of the three JITAP implementing agencies participated in the event, “JITAP : An effective Answer to Trade-Related Capacity Building on the Multilateral Trading System”. Also present were a number of invited Ministers from other African countries, as well as representatives of Regional Economic organizations.

Uganda: EU stakes Shs2b grant for business development

Source : Daily monitor - The European Union has set aside Shs2.7 billion to give as grant to approved private sector entrepreneurs to bolster their business investments. Daily Monitor has learnt that the money will be channelled to the beneficiaries through the Business Uganda Development Scheme - Enterprise Development Foundation (BUDS-EDF), which is under the Private Sector Development Foundation.

Sierra Leone: World Bank Supports Infrastructure Development

FREETOWN, December 6 2005 -- The World Bank Board of Directors today approved an International Development Association (IDA) grant of US$44 million for the Infrastructure Development Project in Sierra Leone, which will rehabilitate selected priority roads, port and airport facilities and support regulatory and institutional reforms associated with the enhanced management of the country's road, port, and airport sectors.  

New Report Calls for More Credit for African Women Entrepreneurs

A report released today calls for development policies that help African women entrepreneurs expand their businesses.

The study is entitled "Support for Growth-Oriented Women Entrepreneurs,” and it focuses on Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania.  It was published in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, by the African Development Bank (ADB) and the International Labor Organization (ILO). The report says African businesswomen are playing an ever-increasing role in the continent’s economy.

E. Africa launches joint tourism promo

The tourism boards of Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania have agreed on a joint strategy to market East Africa as a single tourist destination.
