JICA/STEG: Low Carbon and Stable Supply of Power System in Tunisia project officially launched

The “Low Carbon and Stable Supply of Power System in Tunisia” project officially launched on June 24 with the aim of building the capacity of engineers at the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (French: STEG) and improving the management of the electricity network.

The launch of this project falls under an agreement inked last March by the Industry, Mines and Energy Ministry, STEG and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The agreement provides for the control of electricity supply and demand in a new context marked by the increasing integration of electricity from renewable energy sources into the Tunisian electricity grid, JICA said.

A kick-off meeting was held on June 24 with attendance of Japanese experts, whose role will be to support the Tunisian side in drawing up an action plan to maintain a stable operating capacity of the power system amid a high penetration of variable renewable energy production systems. This goes hand in hand with Tunisia’s strategic vision of integrating renewable energies into electricity production, JICA added.

JICA technical assistance will mainly consist of technology transfer for STEG engineers through studies and training in Tunisia and Japan.

Japanese experts will work with STEG staff to build their capacities in dispatching and storing electricity from renewable energy sources as well as analysing the impact of the gradual introduction of electric vehicles into the electricity grid.
