Public maritime domain: Small Cabinet meeting resolves a number of outstanding issues

A small Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Ahmed Hachani Wednesday resolved a number of outstanding situations related to the occupation of the public maritime domain in order to avoid paralysing the work of hotel units and summer activities during the summer of 2024.

The meeting, which was attended by the Ministers of Finance, Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries, Public Works and Housing, State Property and Land Affairs, Environment and Tourism, decided to continue the process of comprehensive review of the laws and regulations governing the occupation of the public maritime domain, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

Hachani pointed out that the legal framework for the public maritime domain is complex, as it is not limited to social and economic aspects alone, but also requires balanced and sustainable management of coastal and maritime zones, which are under pressure from human activities and the effects of climate change.

He pointed out that the occupation of the public maritime domain is regulated by a system of temporary authorisations that allow economic activities to be carried out (aquaculture, tourism, thalassotherapy, etc.), as well as other activities such as seawater desalination, electricity generation plants and lighthouses.

Minister of the Environment, Leila Chikhaoui, gave a presentation on the evolution of the temporary occupation of the public maritime domain from 1885 to 2024.
