Trade between Tunisia and sub-Saharan African countries in figures

The following are the main figures for trade between Tunisia and sub-Saharan African countries in 2023, according to the Export Promotion Centre (CEPEX).

Exports to sub-Saharan African countries reached TND 1,528.4 million in 2023, compared with TND 1,541.6 million in 2022, down slightly by 1% and accounting for 3.5% of total exports.

Senegal is Tunisia’s leading customer in sub-Saharan Africa, with an export share of 17.5%, followed by Côte d’Ivoire (13.2%), Cameroon (7.8%), Guinea (6%), Gabon (5.5%), Burkina Faso (4.6%) and South Africa (4.2%), etc.

Exports in the Miscellaneous Industries sector (construction and public works, hygienic paper, chemical industry, etc.) account for 44% of total Tunisian exports to countries in this region, followed by the Mechanical and Electrical Industries sector (33%), and the Agricultural Products and Agri-food Industries sector (22%).

According to CEPEX, Tunisia has untapped export potential of $472 million to sub-Saharan African countries.

The sub-Saharan African countries with the highest export potential are Senegal, with $65 million, Côte d’Ivoire ($50 million), Ethiopia ($42 million), Guinea ($37 million) and Burkina Faso ($28 million).
