Tunisia: 16 million dinars allocated for social housing construction (ministry official)

The number of precarious dwellings identified and currently being replaced by new housing units has reached 10,189, with 7,353 already replaced, according to Monia Belhaj Farhat, Director of Monitoring Programs for the Replacement of Precarious Housing at the Goal Management Unit for the Implementation of the Special Social Housing Program at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing.

She stated, during an interview with Achara3 Tounsi on Monday, February 24, 2025, that any citizen living in a precarious dwelling must submit an application to the relevant local delegation, which then forwards the files to the governorate’s services.

A team is then tasked with inspecting the dwellings, conducting studies, and estimating the costs of the work and intervention methods.

She added that a budget of 16 million dinars has been allocated for 2025 to construct approximately 919 new social housing units to replace precarious dwellings, funded by the Ministry of Public Works.

The total cost of the program to replace 10,189 precarious dwellings with new housing units amounts to 218 million dinars, with the imminent launch of the construction of 5,000 new social housing units.

The state covers 50% of the costs of the work, studies, and monitoring, while the beneficiary is responsible for repaying the remaining 50%. An occupancy contract is signed between the beneficiary and the president of the regional council, specifying the monthly payments to be made over a period of 25 years, interest-free and with a one-year grace period.
