Tunisia: Electricity production rises 2%

Total electricity production increased by 2% to 8811 GWh (including self-generated renewable energy), at the end of June 2024, compared to 8661 GWh at the end of June 2023.

According to the Energy Outlook June 2024 published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines, electricity purchases by Algeria and Libya covered 14% of local market demand at the end of June 2024. Production for the local market increased by 3%.

The power generation sector remains by far the largest consumer of natural gas (67% of total demand at the end of June 2024), with 94% of power generation based on natural gas.

The decline in demand from the power sector is due to the limited availability of natural gas and does not reflect demand from the power sector.

Total demand for natural gas dropped by 3% to 2079 ktoe between the end of June 2023 and the end of June 2024. Demand for power generation fell slightly by 1%, while demand for final consumption fell by 7%.

Dry commercial gas production fell by 28% and the royalty for the transit of Algerian gas fell by 3% to 492 ktoe at the end of June 2024 compared to the end of June 2023.
