Tunisia: Inflation continues to rise, hits 10.4% in February

The inflation rate rose to 10.4% in February, from 10.2% in January, according to data published by the National Statistics Institute (INS) on Sunday.

In February 2023, food prices rose by 15.6% year-on-year. This increase is mainly due to the surge in egg prices by 32%, sheep meat by 29.9%, poultry meat by 25.3%, edible oils by 24.6% and beef by 22.9%.

As for the prices of manufactured products, they grew 9.8% due to the rise in the prices of building materials by 8.7%, clothing products by 9.4% and household cleaning products by 10.3%.

For services, the 7.3% year-on-year increase in prices is mainly explained by the 9.8% rise in prices of restaurants, cafés and hotels and the 15.9% rise in prices of public and private transport services.

On the other hand, the core inflation rate (excluding food and energy) decreased to 7.9% in February, after reaching 8.1% the previous month.

Indeed, prices of free (non-regulated) products increased by 11.2% over a year, while prices of regulated products rose by 8%.

Free foodstuffs went up by 18.4%, while foodstuffs with regulated prices rose 0.6%.
