The development of the Tunisian economy requires far-reaching reforms, Sociology researcher Jihad Haj Salem told Diwan FM, adding phosphate production is one of the engines of the economy, but it will not solve Tunisia’s problems.
He explained that the country’s energy and mining sector is in continuous decline, noting that expectations for this sector are far from reality.
Despite the holding of a previous ministerial council and a national security council on phosphate, with the identification of priorities and challenges, and the existence of an integrated program for this purpose, 50% of expectations have not been met, he said, calling on the Ministry of Industry to clarify the real reasons and investigate the matter.
Industry Minister Fatma Chiboub told a plenary session that the volume of phosphate production had fallen to less than 50 per cent compared to 2011, pointing out that the ministry had put in place several mechanisms to restore phosphate activity at the production and extraction levels.
