The latest financial monitoring report prepared by the Central Bank of Tunisia shows that Tunisia’s 22 banks made a net profit of 1.5 billion dinars in 2023, i.e. 300 million more than in 2022, banking expert Sofiene Lourimi told Mosaique FM.
He added that 8% of the banks’ profits are earmarked for “unsecured loans”, generally based on confidence in the borrower and his or her ability to repay.
However, he pointed out that this measure lacks transparency, as the banks do not reveal the beneficiaries or the conditions under which these loans are granted.
On another level, Lourimi pointed out that the BCT report revealed that Tunisian banks were fined 1.9 million dinars in 2023, including 1.1 million dinars imposed on a single bank.
