774b naira spent on calls in Nigeria in 6 months

Telecommunication subscribers in Nigeria have spent about 774.06 billion naira (US$4.7 billion) on voice calls and Short  Message Services (SMS) in the first six months of 2013, according to the regulatory Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The private Punch newspaper reported Thursday that the figure is based on an Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) of US$7.

NCC also pointed out that while about 1 trillion naira was spent on telephone services in 2011, subscribers spent 1.14 trillion naira on the services in 2012 (US$1=156 Naira).

NCC noted that with 120,362 million active subscribers, the revenue profile of the telecommunication service providers could have been boosted by over 131.4 billion naira in June alone.
