10 million tourist mark passed!

Tourism in Tunisia has recorded a clear recovery in a single year, that of 2024, and is well on the way to surpassing the record set in 2019, before the COVID pandemic.

This year has already begun with promising indicators, and the Ministry of Tourism’s forecasts predict that it will be a year of repositioning and awakening for Tunisia’s tourism sector.

In this context, Minister of Tourism, Sofiene Tekaya, told Mosaïque FM on Wednesday that the threshold of 10 million tourists who had visited Tunisia by December 31 had been exceeded by 250,000, well ahead of the indicators for 2019, the benchmark year for the sector in terms of visitor numbers.

In the same statement, on the sidelines of his participation in the opening ceremony of the 44th ordinary session of the General Assembly of the Arab States Broadcasting Union, held in Hammamet, Tekaya stressed that the positive indicators recorded by Tunisia in the field of tourism have helped to consolidate its position as a preferred destination worldwide and that it has been ranked 25th among the best tourist destinations by National Geographic.

The Minister considered that this success was the result of the combined efforts of the various players in the sector and that it was also a success that required everyone to take responsibility for its preservation.

The Minister recalled the richness and diversity of the tourist offer throughout the year, which means that work in the tourism sector is based on a year rather than a season.

In the same vein, the Minister reiterated the importance of the role of the media in supporting tourism and promoting Tunisia in the tourism and economic fields, saying: “In Tunisia, we believe that tourism and the media are complementary, just as we believe in cooperation in various fields.

This is why we value the role of the ASBU media for its contribution to promoting Tunisia as a top tourist and investment destination.

A major promotional program for 2025

In 2025, Tunisia’s National Tourist Office (ONTT) will launch activities to promote Tunisia as a tourist destination.

On this occasion, professionals from the sector discussed the importance of Tunisia’s participation in international fairs and exhibitions in order to promote Tunisia as a tourist destination, encourage investment in the tourism sector and publicize the new tourism programs aimed at developing sustainable and responsible tourism.

These include the Culinary Route, the Cinematographic Route and the UNESCO Route.

The professionals also called for the best possible coordination with all stakeholders, including diplomatic delegations and Tunisian structures abroad, to ensure that Tunisia’s image is promoted abroad.

It should be recalled that tourism in Tunisia recorded a significant upturn in 2023, with 8.8 million visitors, an increase of 49.3% in one year.

The largest number of visitors came from Algeria (2.7 million), followed by Libya (2.1 million) and France (+14.6% with 974,000 tourists).
