Tunisia is the EU’s main clothing supplier

The textile industry is thriving in Tunisia despite a challenging international environment that has impacted several textile-producing and exporting countries worldwide. Tunisia ranks among the main suppliers of clothing to the European Union (EU).

According to recent official data, Tunisia is ranked 10th globally, surpassing the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka, Egypt, and many other countries. The value of exports increased from 1.96692 billion euros in 2019 to 2.28077 billion in 2022 and 2.35840 billion in 2023, while EU imports saw a significant decline of 16.22%.

In 2023, textile and clothing exports grew compared to the same period in 2022. Clothing exports increased by 6.8% from January to December, generating revenue of 8,178.68 million Tunisian dinars, while textile exports rose by 3.07%.

The Tunisian textile and clothing sector saw its exports grow by 5.61% in 2023, reaching nearly 9.7 billion dinars. The sector’s trade balance improved by 12.5 points. With the support of public authorities and the mobilization of companies, the Tunisian textile industry is well-equipped to face future challenges.

Tunisia has bet on the quality of its products to stand out in the European market. While prices have plummeted for most competitors, Tunisian companies have maintained their margins by offering high-end products. The country ranks 10th globally as a supplier of clothing to the EU, outperforming major players like the UK and Egypt.

The implementation of an ambitious roadmap, aiming to recycle 90% of wastewater and reduce the carbon footprint by 30% by 2030, is expected to further strengthen its competitiveness in international markets.

The targeted sectors include materials and accessories for clothing, solutions for the textile and clothing industry, and leather, soles, and footwear components.
