German BHS Tabletop to invest $13 million in 1st African production plant in Tunisia

German premium porcelain manufacturer BHS Tabletop AG has announced plans to invest nearly 40 million Tunisian dinars (approximately $13 million) in a new production facility in Tunisia, marking the group’s first industrial site on the African continent.

The project was formally presented on Tuesday, July 21, during a meeting between Tunisian Minister of Public Works and Housing Salah Zouari, who is also acting Minister Industry, Mines and Energy and BHS Tabletop CEO Jens Becker, along with senior ministry officials.

According to Tunisian authorities, the initial phase of the project is expected to generate more than 500 jobs. The ministry has pledged to coordinate with all relevant agencies to support the project’s development, with the factory slated to begin operations in 2028.

No further details were provided regarding construction timelines, the specific location, or future expansion phases.

A 200-year-old industry leader expanding into Africa

Founded in 1814 in Selb, Bavaria, BHS Tabletop is one of Germany’s leading manufacturers of high-end porcelain tableware, serving the hotel, restaurant, and café (HoReCa) sectors, as well as healthcare institutions and cruise lines. The group owns renowned international brands including Bauscher, Schönwald, PLAYGROUND, and HEPP.

With over two centuries of history, the company produces more than 20 million pieces annually, exported to 140 countries. Its product portfolio extends beyond porcelain to include cutlery, table accessories, and professional catering solutions, positioning BHS Tabletop as a European sector leader.

The group maintains a commercial network spanning Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia, with dedicated teams for several international markets, including the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.

Currently, BHS Tabletop has no industrial facilities in Africa. If the Tunisian project moves forward as planned, it will represent the company’s first manufacturing footprint on the continent.

The group is estimated to employ between 1,000 and 5,000 people and generates annual revenues of approximately $167 million.
