Tunisia and Algeria reaffirmed on Friday their commitment to strengthening customs cooperation, particularly in combating smuggling, facilitating the movement of travelers and goods and accelerating the digitalization of customs procedures, at the conclusion of the Tunisian-Algerian Joint Customs Commission meeting.
Held on July 16–17 at the headquarters of Tunisia’s Directorate General of Customs in Tunis, the meeting brought together the directors general of customs from both countries, along with the Algerian ambassador to Tunisia and senior officials from the two customs administrations, according to a statement from the Tunisian customs authorities.
Opening the meeting, Tunisia’s Director General of Customs stressed the need for closer coordination between the two administrations to address shared economic challenges.
He called for stronger cooperation in combating smuggling networks, while facilitating the movement of travelers and trade flows, expanding information exchange, and strengthening training programs.
His Algerian counterpart highlighted the role of customs administrations in supporting economic activity and called for building on the achievements of bilateral cooperation.
The two sides also reviewed progress in implementing the agreements and recommendations adopted during the previous Joint Customs Commission meeting, held in Algeria in May 2025.
They welcomed efforts to speed up customs clearance procedures and swiftly resolve difficulties faced by economic operators.
On the sidelines of the meeting, a twinning agreement was signed between Tunisia’s National Customs School and the Higher Customs School of Oran to strengthen expertise sharing and expand joint training programs.
