Tunisia is preparing to launch its first solar power project to supply electricity to the country’s motorway infrastructure as part of its energy transition strategy, project officials announced on Friday following a site visit to the Oued Zarga station in the governorate of Béja.
The visit marked the official start of the partnership agreement signed on July 13 between the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME) and Tunisie Autoroutes.
ANME Director General Nafaâ Baccari said the agency will support the motorway operator by providing technical assistance and financial backing through the Energy Transition Fund.
The partnership also includes initiatives to promote energy efficiency, develop electric mobility, and expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
Tunisie Autoroutes CEO Ahmed Ezzeddine said the first project will be built on a 5- to 6-hectare site in Oued Zarga, with the aim of covering a significant share of the company’s electricity needs. The project will later be replicated at other locations across the motorway network.
The program also includes the installation of energy-efficient equipment, smart energy management systems, and the modernization of public lighting.
The two officials also stressed the need to develop a national network of electric vehicle charging stations along Tunisia’s motorways.
