EU grants 470,00 euros to island states in East, Southern Africa

The European Union (EU) Monday signed a pact with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), under which a 470,000-euro grant was earmarked for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in East and Southern Africa to help them implement the sustainable Development Strategy adopted in 2005.

The countries covered are Zanzibar, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles.

“This donation will enhance the partnership between the two parties in the sustainable development of the Small Island Developing States in the region,” according to Alessandro Mariani, EU’s head of the delegation in the Indian Ocean.

The funding will cover the development of a system of monitoring and evaluation for the implementation of the Strategy for SIDS at the national, regional and international levels.

The strategy, adopted in 2005 in Mauritius, had identified 20 priorities for SIDS on environment, climate change, disaster preparedness, transportation and energy.
