The European Union’s aid to Africa is declining, according to the 2012 DATA report issued Tuesday in Brussels.
The 2012 DATA report is a bumper edition of facts, figures, graphs and tables indicating the progress made by European countries towards their aid promises.
The report said that between 2004 and 2010, the European Union’s aid to Africa fell from 15.58 billion euros to 10.54 billion euros.
The report emphasizes that the dwindling aid had affected at least two million Africans who could have been treated for AIDS and 15 million others for malaria.
Despite the decline, official development assistance (ODA) of the European Union still amounts to 54.1 per cent of the total aid to Africa, but represented only 0.4 per cent of the Gross National Income (GNI) of EU countries, far from the 0.7 per cent of GNI to be spent on ODA set by the UN.
In comparison, the report notes that the US granted only 0.2 per cent of GNI to ODA, while Japan and Canada respectively spent 0.17 per cent and 0.31 per cent of their GNI.
