Gabon, EU sign F CFA93b fisheries deal

Gabon and the European Union (EU) have signed a F FCFA 93 billion fisheries agreement under which seven tuna boats and eight rod-using vessels are allowed to operate in the Gabonese territorial waters with a fixed quantity of 20,000 tons to be fished for the European bloc, the Directorate of Fisheries announced here Tuesday.

Under the 3-year agreement, the fishing of tuna and other migratory species is expected to increase from 11,000 to 20,000 tons.

The previous protocol expired on 2 Dec., 2011.

In return, the EU will pay annually to the Central African country 1.35 million euros, 450,000 of which will be geared toward supporting the country’s fisheries policy.
