Sweden forgives DR Congo US$158 million debt

Sweden has cancelled US$158 million of DR Congo’s debt, the chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Sweden in Kinshasa, Mrs. Mette Sunnergren, announced on Monday.

She was speaking at a ceremony at which she and the Congolese minister of Finance, Matata Ponyo, signed an agreement to cancel the debt.

Mrs. Sunnergren indicated that the cancellation of the debt contracted in 1970 was one of the consequences of DR Congo reaching the completion point of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative.

She urged DR Congo to invest in sectors expected to foster development, considering that the country must take up the challenge to fight corruption
