Nigeria to generate electricity from coal

The Nigerian government has announced plans to generate additional 4,000 megawatts of electricity from coal, as an eight-man committee was inaugurated to facilitate the realisation of the goal.

The private Punch newspaper reported on Monday that Minister of Power Chinedu Nebo, while inaugurating the committee in capital city of Abuja, highlighted the danger of depending on one source for power generation.

“The Federal Ministry of Power and the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel are working together to ensure that not only is coal mined from our coal deposit, but that coal is also converted to power.

“When that is done, it is most likely that these coal belts, when utilised, can give us in excess of 4,000 additional megawatts of electricity. No nation can survive on only one or two sources of energy. If there is sabotage or natural disaster that prevents one source of fuel, and if that is the only source, then there is problem,” the minister said.

Nigeria’s perennial electricity problem has continued despite the federal government’s massive spending on the sector.

Africa’s most populous nation of over 160 million people generates just about 4,000 mega watts of electricity from gas-powered and hydro-electric stations, but the amount of generated power is hugely insufficient to meet the country’s power needs.

Most citizens therefore depend on electricity generators to power their homes and businesses.
