HR consulting firm Mercer recently released its Quality of Living rankings, which assess the practicalities of daily life for expatriates and their families working outside of their home location in 2023. This assessment is based on an analysis of 241 cities across five continents.
Tunis was ranked 131st internationally and 7th in Africa.
On the African continent, the top five places are occupied by the capital of Mauritius, Port Louis (88th in the world), and the capital of the Seychelles, Victoria (98th in the world), as well as by the South African cities of Cape Town (102nd), Johannesburg (105th) and Durban (110th), which boast the best quality of life.
Next in sixth place is Rabat in Morocco (127th in the world), followed by Tunis (131st) and Casablanca in Morocco (136th). The rest of the top 10 is completed by Windhoek in Namibia (139th) and Gaborone in Botswana (146th).
Cairo in Egypt is ranked 17th in Africa (185th in the world), while the Algerian capital, Algiers, is 20th (189th in the world).
Mercer based its ranking on some forty criteria divided into 10 different categories, including the political and social environment, the economic environment, the socio-cultural environment, medical and health considerations, schools and education, public services and transport, urban infrastructure and leisure, consumer goods, housing and the environment.
Globally, the five cities offering the highest quality of living for expatriates are Vienna (Austria), Zurich (Switzerland), Auckland (New Zealand), Copenhagen (Denmark) and Geneva (Switzerland).
The capitals of Sudan (Khartoum), Iraq (Baghdad), the Central African Republic (Bangui), Yemen (Sanaa) and Haiti (Port-au-Prince) occupy, in order, the last places in terms of quality of living in the world.
