Tunisia: Economy grows 0.2% in Q1

The Tunisian economy grew by 0.2% in the first three months of this year compared with the first quarter of 2023, said the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

On a quarterly basis, i.e. in relation to the fourth quarter of 2023, the volume of GDP increased by 0.6%, after growing by 0.5% in the previous quarter.

According to the INS, economic growth benefited from a recovery of activity in agriculture (+1.6%) and continued dynamism in services (+1.9%).

On the other hand, the industrial and construction sectors recorded annual declines of 5.0% and 6.8% respectively.

With inflationary pressures easing, the INS points out that domestic demand grew at an annual rate of 0.4%, making it the main structural driver of growth and contributing 0.45 percentage points to economic growth in the first quarter.

The external balance, on the other hand, subtracted 0.26 percentage points from growth, as the volume of exports of goods and services rose by 2.2%, slightly less than the 2.4% increase in imports.
