Tunisia: Electronic payments exceed 900 million dinars at end of September

The electronic payments sector in Tunisia is experiencing encouraging but still limited growth.

According to indicators published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT), more than 14.8 million online payment transactions were made in the first nine months of the current year, an increase of 10.5% compared with the same period last year.

The total value of these transactions amounted to 908.9 million dinars, compared to 888 million dinars at the end of September last year, up 2.3%.

According to the BCT, there were 1,210 active merchant sites and 38,200 VSEs in Tunisia at the end of September (+8.3%). It should be noted that a merchant site is considered active if it has recorded at least one transaction during a rolling year.

With regard to mobile payments, the number of transactions increased tenfold between September 2023 and last September, from 159,000 to 1.6 million.

As a result, the value of these transactions went up from 37.8 million dinars to 232.7 million dinars, a growth of 515%.
