Tunisia: Legislative initiative to find legal solutions for franchise agreements (Riahi)

Following numerous citizen complaints about rising prices of several consumer goods, the Ministry of Trade and Export Development has strengthened inspections and organized meetings to adjust the supply of local and imported red meats, prepare for peak consumption seasons, support consumer purchasing power, and combat all forms of speculation and monopolies.

Measures taken include setting ceiling prices for potatoes and determining a maximum profit margin for fish sales.

To assess the impact of these decisions on the market from a civil society perspective, Lotfi Riahi, President of the Tunisian Consumer Guidance Organization, confirmed to Mosaïque on Friday, August 22, 2025, that citizens’ complaints about price surges for various products at different times are valid, denouncing the exorbitant prices imposed by speculators and distribution channels.

Riahi emphasized that the Ministry’s actions, in coordination with distribution networks, have helped contain price increases, particularly for meat, through inspections and other measures such as importing red meat to regulate the market.

This has also contributed to a drop in the prices of certain fruits and vegetables. He described this intervention as positive, especially with the progressive digitalization of distribution channels for better control.

In the same context, Riahi highlighted the persistent price increases during the summer sales period, noting that bold measures are needed.

Among these is the adoption of a legislative initiative to find legal solutions for franchise agreements. This would help reduce massive imports and the marketing of low-quality foreign products sold at very high prices, thereby restoring some balance in citizens’ purchasing power.
