Tunisia: Parallel economy is not 50%, according to Tunisian Association of Economists

The parallel and informal economy does not account for 50 per cent of the Tunisian economy.

This was stated by Habib Zitouna, president of the Tunisian Association of Economists.

In a statement to ExpressFm, he highlighted the areas and forms that fall within the unorganized sector, noting that rising incomes contribute to an improvement in living standards, which pushes more towards the organized sector.

About 40% of economic laws are not applied, he noted, adding that “the problem is related to legislation and it is necessary to enact laws that can be applied”.

In some cases, legal texts are contradictory and many are outdated, he said, stressing the importance of providing incentives to move towards an organized economy.

The responsibility is shared, he said, noting that the approach in Tunisia is based on tax collection.

There are initiatives, but the issue is deep,” he said, adding that “the citizen does not have to make an effort to apply the laws, but the laws must be applicable”.
