The total production of electricity recorded a quasi-stability at the end of March 2023, standing at 4312 gigawatt hours (GWh), excluding own production consumed, against 4306 GWh, during the same period of 2022, according to the report on the energy situation for March 2023, published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines under the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy on Tuesday.

Production destined for the local market went up by only 1%. STEG still has the lion’s share of electricity production, accounting for 99% of national production at the end of March 2023. Electricity generated from natural gas increased slightly by 0.5%.

However, the production of electricity from renewable energy sources was only 2.3%.

Industrial customers remain the largest electricity consumers. The majority of sectors recorded a decrease in sales, mainly the paper and publishing industry (-23%) and the extractive industry (-22%), while sales increased in the pumping sector (water and sanitation) (+17%), the tourism sector (+16%) and agricultural pumping (+10%).
