A master plan for urban mobility in Greater Tunis is being drawn up. This was the subject of Tunisian-Japanese talks, the protocol of which was signed on Wednesday between the Greater Tunis Urban Planning Agency (AUGT) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in the presence of Mongi Arfaoui, AUGT Director General, and Miyata Mayumi, JICA Resident Representative in Tunisia.
The three-year project aims to develop a master plan for urban mobility in Greater Tunis and to build the capacity of the institutions involved in updating and monitoring the plan.
It will also develop a database to help identify the measures needed to improve urban transport in Greater Tunis, in particular by updating data on traffic, road planning, urban roads and public transport, mobility management, etc.
The project involves several stakeholders, including the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, the Ministry of Economy and Planning, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of the Environment, as well as the National Agency for Energy Management and the municipalities of Tunis, Ariana, Manouba and Ben Arous.
As JICA, we are pleased to contribute to this project, which is crucial to the urban transport sector in Greater Tunis. We hope that the Japanese experience will inspire the Tunisian authorities to find solutions adapted to the Tunisian context,’ said Miyata Mayumi, JICA Resident Representative in Tunisia.
This master plan would be a major achievement with a tangible impact on the daily lives of citizens, helping to promote sustainable economic growth and reduce negative social and environmental impacts such as traffic congestion and air pollution in Greater Tunis.
