Workers’ Day: Burundi to freeze import duty on basic commodities to cut cost of living

Burundi will from 15 May freeze import duties on several commodities to reduce cost of living.

This was announced on Tuesday by president of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, in a spech to mark May Day.

He said some of the items to be affected by the freeze, that would be in effect until the end of the year, are cassava, maize, potatoes, beans, rice, onion, palm oil and flour.

President Nkurunziza, highlighting the negative effects of the world financial crisis on the country’s economic situation, urged his compatriots to work harder than before.

“We must fight hard and endeavour to turn the statutory eight-hour shift into minimum service,” he said.
