Tunisia: 18 million dinars of fines imposed on banks and financial institutions in 2020 (BCT)

The Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) imposed a total of 18.4 million dinars in fines on commercial banks, targeted by disciplinary measures in 2020. The regulatory body in its latest annual report on banking supervision in 2020 has not been totally weak-willed.

The fines imposed by the BCT concerned 21 banks. The institution has kept guard by assessing the liquidity ratio of institutions, in addition to that of credits / deposits as well as conducting banking inspections.

Thus, the sanctions imposed on banks that have not complied with the liquidity ratio amount to 1 bank for an amount of 13,700 dinars.

The BCT has also identified 5 overruns in the ratio of loans to deposits (LTD). In value, the fines dictated by the BCT in 2020 amounted to 3.6 million dinars.

In addition, the issuing institution reports 15 sanctions related to inspection missions. This refers to operations not in accordance with internal procedures and legislation in force passed by the banking institutions. Banks were sanctioned to the tune of 14.8 million dinars in 2020.

In addition to their number, their cumulative amount as well as their nature, the disciplinary measures taken against banks published by the BCT do not indicate the name of the institutions concerned.

The number of banks and financial institutions licensed in Tunisia has remained stable at 42 institutions at the end of 2020. They are divided into 23 resident banks, 8 leasing institutions, 2 factoring companies, 2 investment banks and 7 non-resident banks.
