Tunisia: Digital management of public water resources still in preparation

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources, and Fisheries, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Governance at the Prime Ministry, is preparing a digital platform to manage Tunisia’s public water domain.

This initiative aims to enhance transparency in the water sector, said Hamadi Lahbaieb, Secretary of State for Water Resources.

The move also seeks to streamline administrative services related to water resource exploitation permits, simplifying procedures to reduce intermediaries in the groundwater exploration authorization process and set clear deadlines for each step. Lahbaieb made these remarks during a training workshop on “Water Security in Tunisia: Challenges and Solutions” held at the CAPJC.

The ministry also plans to encourage applicants to obtain legal permits, combat illegal well drilling, improve transparency in permit issuance and boost investment, while reducing costs in the sector.

Additionally, the ministry is working with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to reduce water evaporation from surface hydraulic structures.

A working team has been assigned to conduct a pilot experiment in this field at the Water Research and Technologies Center (CERTE) laboratory.

Lahbaieb also announced that another digital platform will be developed in partnership with the Ministry of Communication Technologies to support real-time decision-making in water resource management.

This system will collect hydrological data, including rainfall, stormwater, and dam reserves, to enable more efficient resource management.
