National crude oil production stood at 524 kilotonnes (kt) at the end of May 2025, thus recording a decrease of 9% compared to end-May 2024, according to the energy situation report for May 2025, published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines.
This decrease affected most of the main fields, namely Nawara (-50%), Ashtart (-21%), El Hajeb/Guebiba (-24%), Barka (-77%), Gherib (-22%), Halk el Manzel (-14%), Sidi Marzoug (-5%), and Adam (-5%).
Other fields, however, recorded an improvement in production, namely Ezzaouia (+109%), Gremda/El Ain (+125%), D.S.T (+65%), M.L.D (+13%), and Bir Ben Tartar (+15%).
The daily average oil production went from 29.8 thousand barrels/day at end-May 2024 to 27.3 thousand barrels/day at end-May 2025.
Slight decrease in petroleum products
National demand for petroleum products recorded a slight decline of 1% between end-May 2024 and end-May 2025, reaching 1,809 ktep.
The Observatory reported a 5% drop for gasoline, 4% for gasoil, and 24% for fuel oil. However, demand for petroleum coke increased by 4%.
Regarding the structure of petroleum product consumption, it did not undergo any significant change between end-May 2024 and end-May 2025, except for a few products, notably gasoil, whose share dropped from 45% to 43%, gasoline from 19% to 18%, and LPG from 18% to 20% over the same period.
As for road fuel consumption, it recorded a decrease of 4% between end-May 2024 and end-May 2025. It represents 61% of total petroleum product consumption.
LPG consumption recorded an 11% increase between end-May 2024 and end-May 2025.
Petroleum coke consumption recorded a 4% increase between end-May 2024 and end-May 2025 (partially estimated data).
This product is used exclusively by cement factories and is substitutable by natural gas and heavy fuel oil, the Observatory recalled.
On another note, aviation jet fuel consumption recorded a 5% decrease at end-May 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year.
