Tunisia: Historic decline of checks, rapid rise of bills of exchange

Bank telecompensation in Tunisia continued its upward trend in the first half of 2025, confirming its central role in interbank payments.

According to data published by the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) in its latest payments bulletin, the volumes and amounts exchanged via the various cleared instruments showed a clear increase.

With 18.5 million transactions totaling 37,686 million dinars, the transfer remains the most used and the highest-value payment method.

Its growth of 9.7% in volume and 40% in value reflects the growing confidence of individuals and businesses in this channel, facilitated by the digital and mobile platforms set up by banks.

Direct debits stand out for the fastest growth. The number of transactions reached 3.8 million (+20.8%), for an amount of 14,904 million dinars (+24.1%).

Regarding traditional instruments, the use of checks saw a sharp decline in the first half of the current year, to the benefit of bills of exchange.

Checks totaled 4 million transactions (-66.8%) for an amount of 27,605 million dinars (-55.3%), while bills of exchange reached 2.1 million transactions (+155%) for 25,614 million dinars (+55.8%).

However, the BCT highlights that rejection rates remain high, reaching up to 45.4% in number for direct debits, 10.6% for bills of exchange, and 2.7% for checks.

In value terms, rejection rates reached up to 9% for bills of exchange, 5.2% for checks, and 6.7% for direct debits.
