ONTT–GSTC partnership to anchor sustainable tourism in Tunisia

For Tunisia, sustainable tourism now appears to be more than a choice, as concrete steps are being taken to make it a key pillar of the tourism sector.

The latest development in this framework is a memorandum of understanding signed on Tuesday between the Tunisian National Tourist Office (ONTT) and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) to promote sustainable tourism in Tunisia.

Signed during a national workshop organized by the Ministry of Tourism in partnership with ONTT, the agreement aims to help the national tourism office develop a roadmap for sustainable tourism based on GSTC standards.

It will provide the office with training and resources on implementing GSTC standards, facilitate the transition of tourism stakeholders toward sustainability, support certification through GSTC-accredited bodies and help align Tunisian standards with international benchmarks.

As Tourism Minister Sofiene Tekaya emphasized, “tomorrow’s tourism cannot be based solely on increasing visitor numbers. It must also be based on quality, responsibility, resilience, the valorization of territories, and the involvement of local communities.”
