Tunisia: Electricity production up 7%

Tunisia’s national electricity production, including self-generated renewable energy, rose by 7% at the end of April 2026 to 5,945 GWh, compared with 5,577 GWh during the same period in 2025, according to the energy report published by the National Observatory of Energy and Mines.

Production for the local market increased by 3%, while electricity imports, mainly from Algeria, covered 9% of local demand by the end of April 2026.

Electricity generated from renewable sources accounted for 8.2% of total production over the same period. The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) still dominates the sector, representing 92% of national electricity production.

In addition, around 466 MW of rooftop solar PV capacity had been installed by April 2026 in the residential sector, along with 130 MW in medium and high voltage installations across industrial, tertiary and agricultural sectors.

Electricity sales increased by 3% between April 2025 and April 2026. Sales to high-voltage customers fell by 6%, while medium-voltage sales remained broadly stable.

Low-voltage sales, mainly residential consumption (around 75% on average), are based on bi-monthly billing data, nearly half of which is estimated, making it difficult to accurately assess real consumption, the report noted.

Industrial users remain the largest consumers of electricity, accounting for 61% of total demand from high- and medium-voltage customers at the end of April 2026.

Several sectors recorded declines in electricity sales, including the chemical and petroleum industries (-7%) and construction materials (-4%).

In contrast, others saw increases, notably the paper and publishing industry (+7%) and agricultural pumping (+6%).
