US applauds Kenyans over 4 March elections

The US has applauded the people of Kenya for participating peacefully in the 4 March general elections, as the final results of the polls are being awaited.

”Although there were scattered acts of violence in two areas of the country, the vast majority of Kenyans voted in a calm, patient, and orderly manner,” the US State Department said in a statement obtained by PANA here.

It also ”encourage” the African nation’s electoral commission to continue its work in a thorough, transparent, and professional manner.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has assured it will make regular and timely announcement of results as and when received.

The US urged all Kenyans to come together and move forward peacefully ”to realise the full promise and benefits of the new constitution”.

It also called for any election disputes to be resolved peacefully through the Kenyan legal system, adding: ”It is critical that Kenya avoid the post-election violence that marred the December 2007 presidential contest”.
