African women fish processors meet in Côte d’Ivoire Monday

The African Confederation of Artisanal Fisheries Organisations (CAOPA), a West African NGO, is due to hold a conference Monday in the Ivorian town of Grand Bassam (45km east of Abidjan), to improve the contribution of fisheries to food security and to the right to food in Africa.

The meeting, which will focus on the role of gender in all activities of artisanal fisheries, will bring together 60 women processors from 16 African countries (Tunisia, Mauritania, Senegal, Cape Verde, Gambia , Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Congo, Gabon, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone).

Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), several development partners and civil society organisations (CSOs) in Africa and Europe, the meeting will formulate proposals “to consider a series of actions related to the importance of artisanal fisheries to food security and the vital role of women in the sub-sector,” Nicole Franz, fisheries policy expert at FAO, told PANA.
