Belgium: ‘EU is Algeria’s main trading partner’

Member States of the European Union (EU) are Algeria’s main trading partners, according to a report by the Algerian Customs Statistical Office, obtained here by PANA.

The report indicated that in the first quarter of 2014, the flow of trade between the two partners amounted to 51.6% of Algerian imports and 66.55% of its exports to the European market .

Algerian exports to the EU, amounting to US$16.43 billion in total volume, however, recorded a decline of 6.02% compared to the first quarter of 2013.

The decrease is explained by a 6.02% drop in imports of oil from Algeria, which represent 95.59% of the total volume of imports from the North African country.

The report emphasized that the non-oil exports are marginal, with only 4.41% of the total volume of exports, representing a value of US$ 725 million.

According to the report, the Algerian imports from the EU fell by 7.84 pc, moving from US$ 7.74 billion in the first quarter 2013 to US$ 7.130 billion for the same period in 2014.

According to the document, Spain remains Algeria’s main customer, absorbing 13.68% of the country’s exports, followed by Italy with 13.31% and France with 11.97%.

Algeria’s leading supplier is France with 12.11% of Algerian imports, followed by Italy with 13.31% and Spain 8.78%.
