Mauritania removed from international aviation security watch list

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has welcomed the aviation sector reforms embarked upon by Mauritanian authorities which culminated in the removal of the north west African nation from ICAO’s “safety watch list”.

In a letter of commendation, addressed to the Director General of the Mauritanian National Agency of Civil Aviation (ANAC) and obtained by PANA here Saturday, the ICAO said that in view of the latest development, Mauritanian certified air carriers can now operate in European air spaces after a two-year ban for “serious breaches of civil aviation safety and security”.

The carriers are expected to resume flights to Europe as from February 2013 with services extended to Las Palmas and the Spanish archipelago of the Canaries.

ICAO also urged other countries facing similar challenges to learn from the Mauritanian experience.
